Review: Naboo Starfighter & Naboo (#9674)

Our Star Wars pre-order arrived today and Sam and I were quick to build one of the new Planet Sets.  These sets come with a mini-fig, a mini-ship, and a mini-planet. For $10, it’s not a great deal and I expect we’ll see the Naboo and Tatooine sets marked down before they sell through.

At 56 pieces, we are not talking about a huge build. As far as a co-build project? Well, read on!

Co-build rating: 2/5
Why such a low rating? It’s pretty simple – one person gets to build a cool ship, the other builds a mini-fig and base. Someone is just having more fun!  It is possible to build this set with two people, but its so small, you have to wonder why.

Overall rating: 3/5
I was originally thinking a 2 out of 5, but Sam found the Naboo Starfighter kind of neat. The yellow is a big hit, and she likes the long engine pods. It’s fairly swooshable and plays well. The mini-fig is very meh – who wants a Naboo pilot? I’m surprised they didn’t go with a pilot Anakin instead. The planet is neat, but there is no real rhyme or reason to the top and bottom. You just kind of line the two pieces up and connect – there are no geographical features to show where things line up.

The base is just horrible. I would like to mount the planet to the base, but since it is just studs, it can’t sit on the base. The Starfighter rotates too freely on the base, there is no friction holding it in place at all. I guess that allows you to better pose it, but it just seems too loose.

These are neat display pieces and I think they will look good on my desk, but I’m not convinced they would be all the fun for kids.

  1. I built this set last night and I wish they had went with chrome pieces for the front, but other than that, it was a spiffy set.

As for Naboo pilot vs Anakin, I’ve got tons of Anakin already, so it was nice to get additional Naboo pilot.
